Traditional character and modern details in easily furnished coaching inn; good rooms

We get warm praise every year because of this lovely old coaching inn – about every aspect. The roomy, charmingly furnished lounge club has some exposed stone and beams and great rambling corners with cushioned settles among pleasantly assorted and comfortable seats and fabric armchairs; there are tables on flagstones and rugs, animal prints on cozy paintwork and both an open fire and a woodburning stove. Hook Norton Hooky and a couple of friends eg Caledonian 80/- and Wickwar Cotswold Method on handpump and twelve wines by the glass; the chocolate labrador is known as Cocoa. The simple community bar features darts, share, a juke box and a TV; background music. There are tables in the major back garden, with a play location. This might be a charming destination to stay static in pretty bed rooms.

Rewarding food from a seasonal menu includes sandwiches, grilled mackerel with nice potatoes, onions and horseradish dressing, smoked duck with watermelon and feta salad and raspberry vinaigrette, steak in ale cake, crazy mushroom, leek and stilton vol-au-vent with mustard ointment sauce, pancetta-wrapped guinea-fowl suprême with garlic and thyme jus, bass fillets with ratatouille and salsa verde and puddings such as for example chocolate, morello cherry and kirsch trifle and white chocolate and tangerine cheesecake with lime and cranberry compote; they even offer a-two- and three-course set selection meal and until 7pm (not weekends).
